The Family Literacy Program (Escuelita) is a literacy enhancing/ preschool readiness program for Spanish speaking parents and their preschool aged children. Escuelita meets on Fridays (during the school year) between 11:00 A.M.-1:30 P.M. in the Sioux Center Early Headstart classroom. A light lunch is served at 11:00 and class follows. Classroom activities include guest teachers reading a story, working with parents to model reading to their children, related arts/crafts activities, games, and time for parents to interact with each other and the teacher.
Children go home with a different backpack each week containing a book, a toy or game related to the story (puzzles, counting/sorting/matching games for example), and literacy enhancing activities for the parents and children to work on throughout the week.
The class is free.
The Boyden Public Library offers a bilingual story time, Cuenta me!, On the 4th Thursday of the month at 6:30 P.M.
